Prep for the Top 10 Interview Questions

Prep for the Top 10 Interview Questions

Carole Martin / Monster

July 08, 2008

Too many job seekers stumble through interviews as if the questions are coming out of left field. But many interview questions are to be expected. Study this list and plan your answers ahead of time so you’ll be ready to deliver them with confidence.

What Are Your Weaknesses?

This is the most dreaded question of all. Handle it by minimizing your weakness and emphasizing your strengths. Stay away from personal qualities and concentrate on professional traits: “I am always working on improving my communication skills to be a more effective presenter. I recently joined Toastmasters, which I find very helpful.”

Why Should We Hire You?

Summarize your experiences: “With five years’ experience working in the financial industry and my proven record of saving the company money, I could make a big difference in your company. I’m confident I would be a great addition to your team.”

Why Do You Want to Work Here?

The interviewer is listening for an answer that indicates you’ve given this some thought and are not sending out resumes just because there is an opening. For example, “I’ve selected key companies whose mission statements are in line with my values, where I know I could be excited about what the company does, and this company is very high on my list of desirable choices.”

What Are Your Goals?

Sometimes it’s best to talk about short-term and intermediate goals rather than locking yourself into the distant future. For example, “My immediate goal is to get a job in a growth-oriented company. My long-term goal will depend on where the company goes. I hope to eventually grow into a position of responsibility.”

Thanks for this, I always freeze up in interviews, even though I know I can do the job. Especially the 'why should we hire you over anyone else?' question. I don't like to praise myself up much, and it always feel as if you're putting others down, so I always fail this one!

behavior based questions help you to identify the traits and charactersitcs a person has that are innate. Who would you rather hire? Someone who has the skills, knowledge, etc., or someone with a great attitude, personality, and aptitude to learn the skill? It all depends upon what you need - but if you are dealing with a people business - remember you can't teach a porcupine to be a teddy bear.

Prepping for behavioral interview ("Tell me about a time when...") questions, which are the norm nowadays is really helpful in delivering a kick butt interview. Think of 5 - 7 scenarios from past positions. Write down each aspect of the situation, who was involved, what did you do, who benefitted, what would you do differently, what were the challenges/solutions, processes followed or developed, communication breakdowns/successes, etc. Get very familiar with all aspects of each scenario and you should be able to use those 5 - 7 scenarios to answer almost any behavior interview question.

Many interviewers use the "tell me about a time when..." and most of the time my mind goes blank. Later, when I am done with the interview I remember many stories I could have told her/him. Typically, what type of answers is the interviewer looking for? I always feel like my answers are too long.
