Ok, I have recently interviewed for an HR Manager position with a local company and feel that it went fairly well. The recruiter contacted me and informed me that the position was filled, but there was another position coming available that he suggested I apply for that as it would be a strong fit for my background. Now, my question is this, the company's process if very structured and requires a lengthy application process.

Do I fully modify my resume and play the game as if I had not already interviewed for  the prior position? Or, do I do some minor tweeks and resubmit. The difference the position is a Manager (interviewed) and a Generalist (applying) so, strategic vs day-to-day operations.

If you are interested in the job, treat the process as a new job. Redo the resume just as you would if it was from a completely different source.

Every job posting is unique in nature, even if they seem similar. Therefore, I suggest you modify your resume to mirror the essential job functions of the particular position you are applying for.

I suggest that you make modifications to your resume by highlighting areas which demonstrate and clearly show how you meet the essential qualifications which have been advertised.  Your resume would have a better presentation if it flows well and does not look like just cut and paste product.  If a covering letter is part of the process, you could also provide concrete examples of these specific skill and work experiences to get ithrough the initial screeing.

The window of opportunity may have passed already, but if the recruiter felt strong enough about you as a candidate to tell you another opportunity was coming that you would be a strong fit for - I think it would have been fair to ask that recruiter for some positive critique on how you could present yourself, your skills and your resume in the best light to secure this new opportunity.

Do you think you could re-open that line of communication with the recruiter?   "I really appreciate you giving me notice of another opportunity at your firm that you think I may be a strong fit for.  Is there anything you feel that I could do to highlight these strengths or other items that you think I should present in a different way for the role?"

I always appreciated well thought out questions and communication from candidates.  It would always give me one more positive thing to make my decision on.

Good Luck!
