I named my little Yorkie Rosie.  I gave her the name of someone who was in a nursing home at the time who I dearly loved and is no longer with us. Everyday I have the pleasure of seeing my precious little Yorkie and remembering the special person I once knew. When  I told my friend that I had named it after her she was so thrilled and said she felt honored. When I brought my little Yorkie to see her she wanted her on her lap the whole time to pet her while we were there. If we didn' t bring her one of the first things she would always ask was; "How Is my little Rosie". It  made me feel good that I could in some way help brighten her last days....

I have a pomeranian and named him Dusty. Nothing much behind it but his tail reminded me of a duster.

We can't have cats or dogs so our home has always had a guinea pig, a great social animal.  We named our latest Ami (pronounced aw - me) as it means friend in several languages.  She is so sweet and really completes us as she climbs on our shoulders and rests so softly.  She gives such companionship and pays special attention to a dear elderly aunt of ours who is in her late 80s.  This aunt does not have any pets but says Ami is a special little girl who is able to help her forget loneliness when she is around.

Aspen Colorado Blizzard. He is an all white Siberian Husky with ice blue eyes. (He is called Aspen)

I have 3 girl Huskies too. Baily, Cooper and Cyndee, they were just following the alphabet. (Cyndee and Cooper are sisters, Aspen and Baily are parents to them)

It might look like I am doing nothing but at a cellular level I am really quite busy!

I have a spoiled Siberian Husky, Cody.  Nothing special behind it, I just liked the name.  His brother's name was Neeko.  My husband chose that name as it was a character Steven Seagal played.  Neeko was a gift from his sister and his sister's favorite actor was Steven Seagal.

Let's see:

We have a new kitty named "Putz."   She meows all the time and my daughter named her that based on the characters of Walter Matthau calling his annoying neighbor Jack Lemmon "Putz" in Grumpy & Grumpier old men.

We have a 1.5 yr old cat named "Boo."  She's all black with sparkling gold eyes and just a smidgen of white on the tips of her feet, under her chin and on her neck.  She loves to sneak up on you in the middle of the night and wake you up with her nose.  Kinda scary but cute, which gave my daughter the idea to name her "Boo" after the cute little girl character in the movie "Monsters Inc."

I had a gorgeous, blue-eyed, super friendly Siberian Husky female, whom I named "Sasha" after a Russian girlfriend from college who had the same qualities.

I had a 14 foot long reticulated python I named "Monty."   After Monty Python.

Had a pretty beta (fish) we called "Burp" because of the way he came to the surface to gulp air.

We have an AKC Bullmastiff named Sheeba as in the queen. She is in charge of the property no doubt. She is a lovable hulk of a dog (90lbs.) and a wonderful family dog but if you don't know her she's some kind of mean looking and makes all the right noises for a guard dog. We now have 6 pups by her and a big AKC brindle male named "Punk"(130lbs.). I think the name is short for "Pumpkin" because his head is just about that big but what a big baby. I love those pups but I want to sell EVERY one of them. Man that's allot of work. Somebody buy one. Hint: a stud fee is usually indicative of the price of a puppy. Punk’s fee: $1000.00. No that's not a typo, incredible isn't it? I was making my buddies in the office laugh because I told them I was making payments on Dog Sperm. I must be crazy.

We have quite the zoo at our house... two cats, two dogs, and at least six lovebirds in an avery at any given time [we give them away to loving owners!]. We started out with two lovebirds, one of them unnamed, and the other one we subsequently ended up calling Casanova because... well, you can guess, really. They are such prolific breeders that we end up calling their babies really random things, like Captain Crunch and PIstachio von Schnitzel. =P

She came as Liza - and it id dnot fit - I started calling out all the names I lied and shse di not even bat an eyelash - then I said where is somewhere exoctic I have never been - but want to go - Rio de Janerio (sp?) and she responded to it. The name stuck.

I raised an orphan racoon when I was a kid.  I named him "Bandit" after the cute little mask he had on his face.

Oh, and I almost forgot one of my favorites:

"Bullwinkle"

He was a pet red squirrel I saved as an orphan.  He would sit on my shoulders while I gardened and pick peanuts out of my shirt pocket.   He'd run down my back when I bent over to pick up a weed and he'd run back up when I stood upright.   He was fun.

I picked the name from the cartoon show "Rocky and Bullwinkle" but with a twist.  In the show, Bullwinkle is a moose and rocky is the squirrel.   All the kids at school laughed when I would take him to show and tell for my kids.  They thought I was goofy for messing up the name.  I never told them I did it on purpose.

To me pets are considered "comfort food".  Currently we have 3 dogs; one chocolate lab (Sailor), one black lab (Shadow) and one lab/collie mutt (Daisy a/k/a crazy Daisy).  Shadow and Daisy are our "granddogs".  In May our daughter and son-in-law moved from 3 acres in the country to a house in the "burbs".  None of us could bare the thought of having to give them up, much less seperating them.  My husband and I live in the country with 4 acres where the dogs can run so they moved in.  Sailor was rescued from the animal shelter and Shadow from a family that could no longer care for him.  Of course they both have the normal lab temperment.  Daisy was adopted as a pup and lives up to her nickname crazy Daisy.  She is a little spastic at times but always the first to come when called.   None of the dogs are "house" pets, they own the outdoors.  However, Sailor is petrified of storms.  The first sound of thunder he is at the door ready to come in.  A comfy cage in the laundry room is all he needs to calm down.  Over the years we have had to put two dogs "down" because of illness.  If any of you have experienced this you know what a lost feeling it is.  We have the most compassionate vet there ever was.  Each time he and his technician cried right along with us!

We have had several cats over the years, but living in the country can tend to shorten their life span.  Right now we have a cat (part siamese) named "Sy".  We have NEVER had to "buy" or adopt a cat.  For some reason they just appear.  Imagine that!   Sy is allowed in the house and very spoiled.

Somehow it is comforting just reading the unique stories about poeople and their pets. Our foster is a foster because  he cannot be with cats - so sad for us - we need a cat-friendly dog. Each day we bond more and each day becomes harder - so this forum reminds me that wonderful animals come in and out of our lives... He will be an amazing dog for the right people. And we can then share our love with the next rescue who needs it!

Since I was a kid I loved animals. At one point we did not have the  money for a "real" pet. My mama bought me a yarn dog from the thrift store. I walked that dog everywhere - I think she had to sew its face back on at least 5 times!!!  As an adult I have had cats, hamsters, lizards, fish, dogs - -- so I await the next wonderful, loving animal spirits to join our home! Kudos to all the animal lovers out there!

I don't have a pet currently, but this question made me think about a cat I had when I was still in highschool.  This was the coolest cat!  It was all black except for white puffs of hair in his ears and I think he might have been a little crazy.  He loved to "hide" on you and then jump and attack when you least expected it.  Of course 90% of the time he wasn't hidden all that well.  His favorite spot was under the clothes rack when we had clothes hanging from it.  His head would be poking out one side and his tail the other but he sure thought he was sneaky.  Then, anytime you walked by, he jumped out and ferociously attacked you and then ran back under the clothes rack to hide.  It was hilarious!  And since he was declawed and didn't actually bite, it never hurt anyone.  So his name became Boo.

The best though was when I'd be in my room with friends and he would be hiding under the bed.  If we were on the floor doing anything; painting nails, homework, whatever; Boo would jump out from under the bed and scare the wits out of whatever friend it was.  They hated it but I couldn't stop laughing!

He had a million other wacky traits that I won't bore you with, but there's never been a cat quite like my Boo.

I had a cat once that I rescued from a shelter in San Diego.  Her name was Katrina, but my friend who asked me to rescue her was also named Katrina, and insisted that I change the cat's name.  So, I observed the cat for a couple of weeks.  She loved to follow me around the house when I was cleaning and leave little paw prints everywhere.  She would sit in the sink when I was cleaning or washing, and she would sit in the tub when it was wet, so there were always little paw prints.  I'll never understand how she got them on the walls!!  But, I named her Paws because of the prints.
